Max Roach a la carte

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put ’em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

 

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach’s other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

Thelma Gracen on Ditto Label!

その筋 (?) のファンには有名なジャズシンガー セルマ・グレーセン (Thelma Gracen) と、泣く子も黙る偉大なロック/ポップアーティスト ポール・マッカートニー (Paul McCartney)。この二人を結ぶ意外な繋がりについてご存知でしょうか?

Thelma Gracen (a very obscure female Jazz vocalist) and Paul McCartney (needless to say the biggest icon in the Rock/Pops history) – do you happen to know the surprising link between these two artists?

Microgroove War May Be Settled Soon

I have introduced various old record catalogues in my previous articles (see “Old Record Catalogues” articles, Part 1, 2, 3 and 4, although they are currently written only in Japanese), and some articles also featured qutations from disc reviews and ads on Down Beat magazine back issues which I have. Actually it’s always fun and interesting to read from pages to pages, ads to ads, reviews to reviews – such magazines and newspapers of many many years ago still delivers atmosphere of that era, working like “time capsules” of when Jazz was one of the driving forces in the Popular music. Other than that, they are full of invaluable information which is very useful for discographic purpose.

最近ここに書いたエントリでは、古いレコードカタログを紹介してきました。それらのエントリ中で、ダウンビート 誌のバックナンバーからディスクレビューや広告などを引用することもありました。実際、こういう古い音楽雑誌を読むというのは、非常に面白く興味深いものがあります。全ての記事、広告、レビューなど、そのどれもが、あたかも タイムカプセル の様に、ポピュラー音楽においてジャズが重要な位置を占めていた昔の息吹を感じさせてくれます。そして、ディスコグラフィー的に非常に参考になる情報であふれています。

The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1993

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago I was near Kichijoji station on an errand, and dropped into a large CD chain store I seldom visit. I was lucky enough to find a basket of CDs marked 50% off, so I picked up several — this is one of them (or rather, one box).

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) come to mind when you hear the label name Vee-Jay? If you are a rock fan, The Beatles probably come first, since this famous band released their first US LP on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a jazz fan, fine leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come to mind.

Old Record Catalogues, Pt.1

bassclef さん のところの 「Jazz On The Bounce (bel canto)」 というエントリ。ここのコメントで、SP、10インチLP、12インチLP、シングル盤、EP などの価格についての話題がありました。

何年か前に、たまたま古いカタログパンフレット (いろんな時期のいろんなレーベルのミックス) をロットで買う機会がありまして、bassclef さんのところに書いたのも、それらを一部参考にしました。せっかくなので、なにかの参考になればと思い、何回かに分けて紹介してみようと思います。

Anita O’Day in her early years

公開する前に逝去されたのが個人的には残念でしたが、ともあれ、数ヵ月前からぽつぽつと書いて未公開だったのがこれです。
