長いこと日本盤 LP で聴いてきたのですが、先日ボロボロのオリジナル盤を格安で見付け，購入しました。 しかし、普通のボロ盤とはちょっと違う感慨があります。

I’ve enjoyed this album (of Japanese LP reissue) for a long time – then the other day I found the original LP issue (which was not in excellent condition at least visually), and I bought it. Although in fair condition, this copy might have a special story behind it . . .

The Delfonics – their first four singles

今まで何百回となく耳にしてきた Delfonics (デルフォニックス) のこの名曲。
やっぱり何度聴いてもいいですねぇ。

La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-Means, I Love You.
Consciously or unconsiously, I have heard that song (by The Delfonics) over hundreds of times.
Great is the masterpiece. It really is.

A Few Facts About EmArcy Label, Pt.1

えー、2004年11月に公開した 「Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”」 以来、Mercury Records Collection に載せた、大変久し振りとなるコラムです。 第2回となる今回は、何人かからのリクエストにお応えして、 EmArcy レーベルに関する四方山話としました。 かなり長くなりそうなので、2〜3回に分けて掲載する予定です。今回はその前編。 とりあえず日本語版だけの公開です。 こちら からどうぞ。

Well, it’s been a very long time since I published the very first article back in Nov. 2004 (entitled Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”). Here is the second article (by several friends’ requests), talking all sorts of things about EmArcy label. The entire article will be getting very long, and here is the “Part 1” of the EmArcy article. Sorry, the English edition of the article is not ready yet (only Japanese edition is currently available) – stay tuned.

コレクションを整理して、一部買い取りに出そうかな〜と作業をしていた時に、10年ほど聴いていない懐かしいアルバムに出会いました。はて、どんな内容だっけ、と、久し振りにターンテーブルに載せてみると、あれびっくり、こんなにゴキゲンな内容やったっけ?? ということで、10年越しで愛聴盤に昇格したと同時に、買い取りに出されるのを免れたのでした。

我達ハ何故ニLPヲ欲スルカ (其ノ壱)

何から何まで CD で再発されるこの御時世，LP (や SP) でしか入手不可能な音源なんてごく限られたものになってきているはず．なのに世の中には，私を含めて，毎月の LP 購入枚数が CD のそれを圧倒的に上まわっている奇特な人種が少なからず存在します．

いったい，そういう人達はどうして LP を買おうとするのでしょう．人それぞれに多様な理由づけがなされていますが，ここでは私が理解可能な範囲でそれらを概説してみましょう．ただし，ここでは，パフォーマンスの関係上 CD では格好がつかない人達 (*1) – DJ – は一応除外しておきます．

(*1) DJ を別扱いにしているのは，単に自分が DJ 的なことをやったことがないため，DJ の皆さんのレコード蒐集に関する感覚が自分には身についてないからです．とにかく，旧来のレコードコレクターとは違う感性が必要とされるのかなあ，とは思っていますが，どうなんでしょうね?

Big Apple / Teddy Wilson

本命の盤が落札できず、ついでに入札した盤があっさり落札。オークションだとよくあることですね。

Couldn’t win the “odds-on” favourite disc, while won the other disc(s) by incident – that’s what sometimes happens at the auctions.

「ついでに」買った、なんて言ったら、この盤で素晴らしい演奏をされている皆さんに対して失礼ですね。 1937年の Teddy Wilson コンボの熱演です。

I may be very sorry to the performers on this 78rpm, if they happen to know that I bought this disc by incident 🙂 This is a very HOT swing combo performance headed by Teddy Wilson in 1937.

The Revised Byrds Box Set!

以前 「The Revised Byrds Box Set?」 として掲載した 4枚組? 5枚組? 改訂版 CD ボックス、ボツになったのかとおもいきや、プロモ盤が出回り出した らしいです。

A while ago I wrote about the rumor about the Byrds’ CD box as “ The Revised Byrds Box Set? ”. I thought it was banned already . . . However, according to an interesting source, promotional copies start to circulate . . . Wow.

Brother, Brother, Brother / The Isley Brothers

(this article deals with my favourite Isleys album, “Brother, Brother, Brother”. English version of this article (probably) will not be available.)

私が Isley Brothers を初めて聴いたのは、15年ほど前に購入した “It’s Our Thing” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3001) でのこと。1969年当時、文句なしの全盛期を迎え黒人音楽の分野では完全に最先端を走っていた James Brown からの影響が濃厚な力強いファンクで溢れた、彼らののちの活躍を考えるとマイルストーン的なアルバムといえます。続く “The Brothers: Isley” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3002) や “Get Into Something” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3006) もグルーヴ溢れる力強いファンク系の作品として、聴き所満載です。この辺りでは今では最後の “Get Into Something” が一番好みです。 前作、前々作よりぐっとタイトで切れ味抜群なリズムセクションが曲によってセカンドラインを聴かせたり、なかなか面白い。

その後私は、最初期の “Shout”、“Twist And Shout” までさかのぼったり、セールス的に絶頂だった 3+3 時代のネチネチファンクととろけるバラードまで、ひととおり楽しむ様になりましたが、現在最も良くターンテーブルに載る機会が多いのは、過渡期とされる 1972年にリリースされた本アルバムです。

もし、知り合いに Chet Baker コレクターがいたとしたら、 このアルバムについてどう思うか聞いてみて下さい。きっとこんな感じで答えられるはずです。

. . . マニア泣かせの、なんとも言いようがない「迷盤」というところでしょうか . . .

まぁこのアルバムを彼の「最高傑作」だの「一番好きなアルバム」だのと言う人はさすがにいないでしょう (いたらごめんね)。 しかしその一方で、このアルバムを聴く度に、いろんなことに思いがめぐり、私はとても複雑な気持ちになります。
