The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1993

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago, I went to the centre of Kichijoji (where the nearest train station is located), and I dropped by a CD reseller shop where I seldom went. I found a steel basket filled with many CDs with 50% discount. So I picked up several CDs – this is one of them.

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) comes in your mind after you hear the label name Vee-Jay ? If you are a Rock fan, The Beatles comes first, since this famous band released US first LP album on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a Jazz fan, such nice leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come in your mind.

Your choice? LP with cover, or 78rpms without cover?

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice –
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

Mary Had A Little Lamb / Willie Bryant

瀬谷さんはあっという間に分かってしまいましたが (笑) 78回転 の方でかかっていたのは、 ウィリー・ブライアント (Willie Bryant) の 「Mary Had A Little Lamb」 という曲でした。この演奏、この SP、歴史的名演でもメガレア盤でもないけれども、ホント大好きなんです。

Old Record Catalogues, Pt.1

bassclef さん のところの 「Jazz On The Bounce (bel canto)」 というエントリ。ここのコメントで、SP、10インチLP、12インチLP、シングル盤、EP などの価格についての話題がありました。

何年か前に、たまたま古いカタログパンフレット (いろんな時期のいろんなレーベルのミックス) をロットで買う機会がありまして、bassclef さんのところに書いたのも、それらを一部参考にしました。せっかくなので、なにかの参考になればと思い、何回かに分けて紹介してみようと思います。

Don’t Stop The Music / George Jones

これは 先日届いた14枚 の中の 1枚ではないのですが、先月か先々月に「ついでに」入手したものでした。しかしここまで素晴らしい内容だったとは嬉しい誤算です。

This 78rpm is not one of the fourteen 78rpms I got the other day – probably I bought this a month or two ago along with several other 78rpms I won. However, the music was unexpectedly wonderful to me – it’s a lovely, welcome and fascinating misjudgement.

After the ball, after the fascination…

[Fourteen 78rpms arrived yesterday]

この前の日曜日までの二週間は、毎晩 全仏オープン のテレビ観戦に大忙し (おかげで贔屓にしている ラファは無事三連覇達成。めでたしめでたし)。次の ウィンブルドン が始まるまでの二週間、やっと音楽を聴く時間がとれそうです。

Until last Sunday for two weeks, I was very busy watching Roland Garros matches on TV every night – and one of my favourite players Rafael Nadal has won three straight crowns against the best tennis player in the history Roger Federer which was a great news for me. The next big tournament, The Championships (Wimbledon) will start on 25th of June, and until then I think I can have time to enjoy listening vinyls, CDs and 78rpms after many days of absence.

それにあわせるかの様に、海外から SP が到着。今回も一部を除いて 1枚あたり 5ドル程度で購入。玉石混合ですが、しばらくはいろいろ楽しめそうです。

And it’s a good timing that I received a large parcel yesterday night, containing as many as fourteen 78rpms from the US. Each costed only five bucks with a few exceptions. They might be a mixture of the wheat and the chaff, but anyway I think I will enjoy listening to every 78rpm for a while.
