Tour Electric Mastering’s New Vintage Cutting Chain With Analog Legend Sean Davies

非常に興味深い映像を見つけました。1960年代に Decca でエンジニアとして勤務、現在では往年のアナログレコード全盛期に活躍したヴィンテージ機器（カッティングレース、カッティング時に使用するテープデッキ、真空管アンプなど）のメンテナンスを行っている、伝説のオーディオエンジニア、サム・デイヴィス (Sam Davies) 氏が実際にレストア・メンテナンスして、実際にLP復刻に使用している機材、Ortofon / Lyrec 1965年製カッティングマシン一式を紹介するものです。

I came across an very interesting video on the Internet – the living legend Sam Davies, who worked as an engineer at Decca in the 1960s and now doing restoration/maintenance of vintage studio equipments (cutting lathes, reel-to-reel playback tape machines, all vacuum tube amplifiers, etc), introduces his vintage cutting chain (by Ortofon/Lyrec, 1965) which he actually uses for reissuing vintage vinyl LP records.

Jim Hall Plays Donald Erb

ジャズギターの重鎮 ジム・ホール の、ほとんど知られていない演奏が収録されたアルバムを入手しました。かなりイイです。

I happened to obtain the album featuring one of the least-known recordings by the Jazz guitar maestro Jim Hall – very interesting one and I love it.

Frank Zappa 2012 UMe Remasters: Which To Buy?

寡聞にしてつい先日まで知らなかったのですが、Zappa Family Trust が（ほぼ）全音源の権利を取り戻したのを記念して、UMe (Universal Music Enterprises) とディストリビューション契約を締結、2012年7月から続々と再発が行われているそうです。

嬉しい副次効果（？）として、それらのアルバムは iTunes Music Store で音源をダウンロード購入 することができるようになりました（購入しないにしても、例えば SoundTracking 的には嬉しいですよね）。

で、注目すべきはその内容。Frank Zappa 氏が逝去される直前の1993年にリマスターした通称「承認マスター」ではなく、オリジナルアナログ音源からの最新リマスター でリリースされているタイトルが少なからず含まれているというのです。

更に、過去の CD 化においては、あまり満足のいかなかったマスタリングとなっていたアルバムも、オリジナルアナログ盤に準じた音質のリマスターが楽しめるようになっています。

ただし、余りにもタイトル数が多い御大のカタログ、その全てを一度に購入することはさすがに憚られます。オリジナルアナログ盤や承認マスター、今回のリマスターの音源を比較して、どのアルバムは絶対に買うべきか、どのアルバムは買わなくてもいいか、世界中のフリークが情報を交換しあっています。

What the EP (Extended Playing) Originally Stands For

Google Books 上で The Billboard （米「ビルボード」誌）のバックナンバーが1942年のものからほぼ全て閲覧可能になっています。これにより、レーベル、レコード製造、アーティストの動向など、当時のレコード業界のさまざまな側面の歴史を調査するのが格段に楽になりました。これまでは、図書館のような施設で閲覧したり、目星をつけた号を古本屋やオンラインオークションで購入するしかなかったのですから、コンピュータ上でネットワーク越しに検索しながら目当ての記事を閲覧できるというのは、隔世の感があります。

Almost all back issues of The Billboard magazine (since 1942) is searchable and browsable on Google Books website. This enables us to do very convenient research through the web, on history of record labels, record production, artists and many other topics on record industries in the past. Previously we had to go to libaries to look for specific back issues, or we had to look for and buy them at second hand bookstores or at online auctions.

今回は、マイクログルーヴレコード黎明期の「コロンビア対RCAヴィクター」 「33 1/3 対 45」回転数競争あたりからはじめて、諸説入り乱れて解釈が分かれている「EP」というタームについて、過去の資料を探ってみましょう。Wikipedia 日本語版 では 33 1/3回転7インチ盤である、と書かれている EP盤ですが、それは 誤り で、あくまで45回転7インチ盤の一種である、ということがお分かり頂けるかと思います。

Feb. 3, 1932: The First Stereo Sound Recording Known To Exist

時は1932年2月3日。現存する最古のステレオ録音（とみなすことができるもの）が記録されました（ただし、意図的にステレオ録音されたものではなかった、とされてはいますが）。デューク・エリントン (Duke Ellington) オーケストラによるメドレー録音です。その6日後にも、別のメドレーが録音されました。

It was on February 3, 1932 when the oldest stereo recording known to exist was waxed (although it was not an “intended stereo recording” but an “accidental stereo recording”) – a seven minute medley by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra.

2016年12月4日追記：「Elgar Rematered」のリリースにより、記録がうちやぶられました。こちらは1928年のステレオ録音（Accidental Stereo）とのことです。

Addendum (Dec. 4, 2016): The new CD “Elgar Remastered” snatched the crown of “the oldest accidental stereo recording(s)” – these 4CD set (surprisingly) contains 1928 stereo recordings!

R.I.P. Wilma Cozart Fine

マーキュリーレーベル黄金期、夫のボブ・ファイン氏と共に、数え切れない程の歴史的名録音に携わった伝説的エンジニア・プロデューサ、ウィルマ・コザート・ファイン さんが、2009年9月21日に82歳で永眠されたそうです。

A legendary recording engineer and a producer, Ms. Wilma Cozart Fine (who, together with her husband Mr. Bob Fine, did numerous recording sessions on Mercury label most of which later became true classics) passed away at age 82 on September 21, 2009.

今は昔、ラジオやテレビと共に、リスナーに音楽を届ける重要なメディアとして塩化ヴィニール製のレコード (33 1/3回転の LP レコードと 45回転のシングルレコード) が活躍していた時代。その頃、レコードの製作・製造いうのは、非常にデリケートで細密な技術を要する 高度な職人技 に支えられていました。

Back in the old days when vinyl records (33 1/3rpm LP records and 45rpm single records) played one of the most popular media to deliver various kinds of music to audience (radio and television broadcasts would be vinyl’s counterparts), making vinyl records was like a result of delicate and detailed craftmanship which needed high degree of difficulties.
