Sonny Clark Trio (Time S-2101)

先月、都内の某中古レコード店の壁に “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010) のオリジナル LP が飾ってあるのを見ましたが、そのプライスタグを見てびっくり。なんと 30万円。ひぇぇぇ。

Last month I visited a certain vinyl shop in Tokyo and found the original mono LP of “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010). The most surprising thing was its price – 300 thousand yen (approximately 2,600 USD) – oh my!

ヴィンテージ盤の売価なんて、需要と供給で決まる側面が基本ではあるものの、大抵は お店の言い値 であることがほとんどで、こんな凄い値段がついていても、買う人は買ってしまうところが凄いというか。とにかく、私の様な「コストパフォーマンス重視」の一般ピープル (笑) には全く縁のない世界ではあります。

Usually, a price of a hard-to-find vintage LP is roughly set by the “supply and demand” balance. Also, the price is also usually set by a shop’s own decision. And it’s also surprising that there are some people surely to exist who buy such LPs even though it’s too expensive against “reasonable price”. Anyway I (as one of “ordinary people” who makes much of “cost-performance”) must be a perfect stranger to such an expensive vintage LP.

ME-3: A Bossa Nova de Roberto Menescal e Seu Conjunto

ブラジルの若大将 (笑) といえば、やはり カルロス・リラ (Carlos Lyra) か ホベルト・メネスカル (Roberto Menescal) の名前があがるでしょうか。 ME-2 “Balançamba / Lúcio Alves” に続く ELENCO 3枚目は、その若大将 ホベルト・メネスカル による、ボッサ・ノーヴァの「陽」の部分を極限まで引き出した快速アルバムです。今まで同様、ELENCO Discography からもリンクを張ってあります。

Who was the “young boss of summer” in the Brazilian Bossa Nova scene? Maybe many people will mention such names as Carlos Lyra or Roberto Menescal. ELENCO‘s third album (ME-3) by Roberto Menescal is a really refreshing album being filled with “brighter side” of the Bossa Nova. As always, please also refer the ELENCO Discography entry.

Unsolved Remained / Masha Qrella

私が好きなタイプの音楽が多くラインアップされている、ドイツの MORR Music レーベルから 2005年2月にリリースされたアルバム。昨年暮れに購入してから、最近徐々にターンテーブルに載せる頻度があがってきました。CD と共に LP でも同時リリースされており、こちらは 2枚組 (1枚目が33 1/3回転、2枚目が45回転という変則な組合せ)。もちろん迷うことなく後者を購入しました。

This album, released in February 2005 from German label MORR Music (whose catalogue contains many titles I like), was the one I bought last year. Recently I often pick up the album and enjoy the music. The album is available both in CD and LP format (the latter is double LP format, disc one in 33 1/3 rpm and disc 2 in 45 rpm) – of course I bought the album in LP format with no doubt.

Ray Fowler の傑作? 失敗作?

はじめに (愛すべきハッタリステレオとの出会い)

誰もが知ってる Monk’s Music。演奏破綻寸前のカオス状態が逆にえもいわれぬ迫力を生み出しているという、不思議な魅力に満ちた傑作です。1957年 6月 25〜26日録音。

上に載せたのは ステレオ盤 (の後期プレス、いわゆる Orpheum 盤)。大学入学直後、まだジャズを聴きだしたばかりの私が、大阪梅田の某中古レコード屋で確か 1,800円で買ったものです。私が買ったモンクのアルバムとしても 2枚目 (*1) でした。すでにその頃、初心者には嬉しい OJC なる LP リイシューの存在も知っていましたが、ジャケットを見る限り OJC の方はモノーラル。たまたまステレオ盤の中古を安く見付けたのでそちらを買ったというわけです。ですから、私にとっては長らく、“Monk’s Music” といえば、このハチャメチャっぷりが更に増幅された音が楽しめるステレオ盤を意味していました。ステレオ盤に入っていない B面ラストの “Crepuscule with Nellie” も、やはり OJC から出ていたアルバム “Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane” (オリジナルは Jazzland レーベル) で聴けたステレオバージョン (“Monk’s Music” 収録のものとは別テイク) で長らく親しんでいました。 モノーラル盤を初めて聴いたのはその約2年後、確か日本盤 CD だったのですが、そのあまりの録音の違いに愕然としたことを覚えています。

(*1)： 私が生まれて初めて買ったモンクのアルバムは、当時 CBS から出ていたディジタルリマスターの編集盤 LP “Standards”。Columbia 時代のソロピアノを中心にまとめあげたものですが、実はこれが私が生まれて初めて買ったジャズのレコード 2枚のうちの 1枚でした。もう 1枚はエバンスの “Alone” のポリドール盤。クラシックピアノを少し前まで習っていた当時の私は、とりあえずピアノを聴けば少しはジャズが分かるかも知れない、と思って、なにも分からないままこの 2枚を買ったのでした。

その後随分たってから、ステレオオリジナル盤 (ジャケット表に金色のシールが貼り付けられたタイプ) も買いましたが、しばらくして売り払ってしまいました。その頃にはもう、このステレオ盤の常軌を逸したミックスのことを、愛情を込めて「ハッタリステレオ」 (疑似ステレオではありません、ハッタリステレオです) と呼んでいましたから。けれども、私にあのハチャメチャセッションの醍醐味を初めて教えてくれた Orpheum ステレオ盤への愛着はたちがたく、そちらは今でもレコードラックに残っているというわけです。

オーディオ的な意味で真に「ステレオフォニック」な素晴らしい録音の LP や CD をいろいろ聴いてきた今、このハッタリステレオ盤が 1957年6月にステレオ録音エンジニア Ray Fowler によって一体全体どうやって作られたのか、冷静に分析してみることにしました。(*2)

(*2)： あ、念の為、私はこのステレオ盤、今でも大好きです。ただし、「素晴らしい」という意味での好きではなくて、「おもしろおかしい」という意味での好きですが。

Tijuana Moods / Charlie Mingus

アンプの修理が終わったとメールで連絡がありました。金曜日に取りに行く予定です。あぁ長かった。

I received an email that the amplifier has been repaired. I will be picking it up on Friday — ahh, it was a long time!

さて 前回 載せた 6枚の中に チャールズ・ミンガス (Charles Mingus) の「ティファナ・ムーズ」(“Tijuana Moods”) も入っていました。ベーシストとして、作曲家として、アレンジャーとして、つまり Mingus の多岐に渡る要素がバランス良くフィーチャーされた、初期の名作といえます。

On my previous post, there are six labels (78rpms, 45rpms and LPs) being featured. They include the LP “Tijuana Moods” by Charles Mingus, one of his masterpiece albums in his early period, featuring his every versatile artistry such as a great bass player, a talented composer, and a superb arranger.

アンプが返ってくるまでは、2001年に BMG からリリースされた 2枚組 CD を聴いています。この CD は未発表のフラグメントもテンコ盛りで、文字通り本アルバムの決定版となっています。しかし、この CD を隅々まで聴けば聴く程、“Tijuana Moods” というアルバムに対するいくつかの謎が解明されると同時に、更なる謎は深まるばかり。

Since my tube amplifier is in trouble and is under repair, the only equipment for me at the moment is a PC speaker, and I enjoy listening (although the sound quality is way poor) to the 2CD edition of “Tijuana Moods”, which was released in 2001 by BMG. This definitive 2CD version contains many bonus tracks, most of which are previously-unreleased fragments of the recording. And more devotedly I listen to the CD, the more questions arise in my head, while on the other hand this CD edition also reveals the answers to the mysteries of the album.

修行僧六日目

アンプを修理に出して はや 6日。かなり辛くなってきました。

PC 上で CD を再生し、そこから流れてくる貧弱な音を聴きつつ、脳内補間修正して楽しむというのはかなり大変な労力を要します。とはいえ、イマジネーションや記憶力を駆使しないといけないので、これはこれで楽しいような気も。いや、楽しい様な気がするなんて思ってきてるのは末期症状なのかも。ヤヴァイ。

SP や LP のレーベルを眺めながら、PC に向かって貧弱な音を聴く。

早くこの悲惨な状況を脱したいものです。

Less-known 45rpm, Pt.3 – The Sugarhill Four

It’s been over four years since I firstly opened the site dedicated to Mercury records. The most delightful thing for me has been that various musicians, their relatives, producers or even engineers kindly contacted me by e-mail. They have told me so many invaluable information. I really thank for that.

あっちのサイト を公開して 4年強、一番嬉しいのは、レコードを吹き込んだ御本人やそのご家族、あるいはプロデューサ、エンジニアといった方々からメールを受け取ることです。過去にそういった方々から数多くの問い合わせを頂き、メールでお話しさせてもらい、多くの情報を提供して下さいました。本当に感謝感謝です。

Well, this is the part 3 of the “Less-known 45rpm” article (previous articles are: The Changing Times and Gary Knight 45rpms). This 45rpm, which contains pretty girly-pop tracks, was recorded by a seldom-known girl group of four, who left this 45rpm only. Of course, there is few information about this 45rpm and the group. But recently, a certain person e-mailed me about this 45rpm, and he kindly let me know the member of the band. Then luckily I could have a contact to Deborah Rubin-san (who was the member of the band), and we exchanged e-mails several times. The following interview is a result of editing such e-mails (with kind permission by Deborah-san). Now let’s enjoy the less-known 45rpm, and the very interesting story (here for the first time?) behind the record!

さて、 The Changing Times、 Gary Knight に続いて紹介する「マイナーなシングル」シリーズ第3弾の本盤ですが、この 1枚しか録音を残していない、4人組女性グループのかわいらしいガールポップです。このグループについては全くといっていい程情報がありませんでした。それが最近、ある方からのメールにより、元メンバーの Deborah Rubin さんとコンタクトをとることが出来まして、何度かメールでやりとりをしました。以下、そのメールを元に、(Deborah さんの許可をとって) インタビュー形式にまとめなおしたものです。歴史に埋もれた一枚のシングル、それにまつわる貴重な話 (本邦初公開、いや、世界初公開?) を以下お楽しみ下さい。
