Michell Orbe SE, here it comes!

長らく我が家にあるターンテーブルは、1994年製の Michell GyroDec です。2003年に中古で購入した際 は、SME Series II Improved トーンアームがついていましたっけ。すぐに SME 3009-R に交換してしまいましたが。

My turntable has been 1994 Michell GyroDec, which I obtained second-hand in 2003. I remember it was equipped with the SME Series II imp tonearm, that was instantly swapped with the SME 3009-R tonearm.

もう20年のおつきあいになりますが、いちども手放したいと思ったことはありません。

It’s been twenty years already with this turntable, and I have never thought it time to let that go.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 16

EQカーブの歴史、ディスク録音の歴史を学ぶ本シリーズ。前回 Pt.15 では、こぼれ話的に「ハイ・フィデリティ」という用語の歴史について調べてみました。

On the previous part 15, I studied on the history of the term “High Fidelity (Hi-Fi)” as a side story, before I continue studying more on the history of disc recording and recording / reproducing EQ curves.

今回の Pt.16 は、再び本論に戻り、オーディオ工学に特化した学会の設立、そしてその学会から出された「統一再生カーブ」の提唱、などをみていきます。

This time as Pt. 16, I am going back to continue learning the history of disc recording, including the establishment of an academic society specialized in audio engineering; and the proposed playback curve advocated by that society.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 15

EQカーブの歴史、ディスク録音の歴史を学ぶ本シリーズ。前回 Pt.14 では、1949年〜1950年（または1951年）の「回転数競争」における、各レーベルの参入状況を時系列に追ってみました。

On the previous part 14, I studied more on the history and chronology of which label joined which new format (33 1/3 rpm or 45 rpm) during the so-called “The Battle of The Speeds” era in 1949 to 1950 or 1951.

今回の Pt.15 はその続きなのですが、一休みして、1950年頃からの「ハイファイ」ブームの黎明期よりずっと前に生まれた、「ハイ・フィデリティ」という用語の歴史についてみていきます。

This time as Pt. 15, before I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording, I will look into the side story — i.e. the pre-history of the “Hi-Fi craze”, as well as the history of the term “High Fidelity” itself.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt.14

EQカーブの歴史、ディスク録音の歴史を学ぶ本シリーズ。前回 Pt.13 では、RCA Victor が1949年に発表した7インチ45回転盤（そして敗北した Columbia 7インチ33 1/3回転盤）にまつわるエピソードと、45回転盤、オートチェンジャー、録音再生EQカーブなど、技術的側面などをみてきました。

On the previous part 13, I studied more on the history of RCA Victor’s 7-inch 45 rpm records (and Columbia’s 7-inch 33 1/3 rpm records that RCA Victor defeated), as well as its technical aspects of the 45 rpm records, dedicated record changer attachments, and recording/reproducing characteristics, etc..

今回の Pt.14 はその続きです。今回は、LP や 45回転盤登場直後における各レーベルの「回転数競争」中の対応状況について、時系列でみていきます。ここは、11年前の記事「What The EP (Extended Playing) Originally Stands For」と一部重複する内容もあります。

This time as Pt.14, I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording — a chronology how record labels (except Columbia and RCA Victor) reacted to the new formats and technology (and to the “Battle of the Speeds”). So this shares several contents as previously shown in “What The EP (Extended Playing) Originally Stands For”, the article I published evelen years ago.

Mercury Popular Autographed Photograph Series (and Eddie Gaedel)

先日、カナダとアメリカの国境近くに住む Bernie さんから、こんなメールを受け取りました。

The other day I got an e-mail from Mr. Bernie Crawley (who lives near the border of Canada and the U.S.), which reads:

Hello. Enjoyed your website, great job.

こんにちは。あなたのサイト 楽しませてもらいました。

I just picked up a sleeve, (no disc I’m afraid) to a Buddy Rich 10 inch I think.

ところで、Buddy Rich の10インチ盤用に作られたと思われるスリーヴを入手しました（残念だけど盤はなくてスリーヴ単体でした）。

It is part of the “Mercury Records Popular Autographed Photograph Series“, the back of the sleeve has a bio, similar to what you might find on a long player. There is no mention of a catalogue number & I’m not sure if it was a 78 or a 10” LP.

それは「Mercury Records Popular Autographed Photograph Series」の1枚らしく、スリーヴ裏にはバイオグラフィーが書かれていて、ちょうどLPの裏ジャケみたいになっています。スリーヴにはカタログ番号は書かれておらず、これが78回転盤用のスリーヴなのか、10インチLP用のスリーヴなのかもわかりません。

Have you seen one of these before? Any ideas?

このようなスリーヴを過去に目にしたことはありますか？　なにかご存知のことはありますか？

私もそのようなスリーヴの存在を知りませんでしたし、ネット上であれこれ検索してもまったく情報がありませんでした。ともあれ、その後もメールのやりとりを続けて情報交換をしました。

No, I have never seen such sleeves before. Furthermore, no matter how much I searched on the web, I couldn’t find any information on the “Mercury Popular Autographed Photograph Series”. Anyway I tried to keep in touch with him, and had shared several information.
