Max Roach a la carte

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put ’em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

 

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach’s other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1993

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago, I went to the centre of Kichijoji (where the nearest train station is located), and I dropped by a CD reseller shop where I seldom went. I found a steel basket filled with many CDs with 50% discount. So I picked up several CDs – this is one of them.

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) comes in your mind after you hear the label name Vee-Jay ? If you are a Rock fan, The Beatles comes first, since this famous band released US first LP album on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a Jazz fan, such nice leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come in your mind.

Don’t Stop The Music / George Jones

これは 先日届いた14枚 の中の 1枚ではないのですが、先月か先々月に「ついでに」入手したものでした。しかしここまで素晴らしい内容だったとは嬉しい誤算です。

This 78rpm is not one of the fourteen 78rpms I got the other day – probably I bought this a month or two ago along with several other 78rpms I won. However, the music was unexpectedly wonderful to me – it’s a lovely, welcome and fascinating misjudgement.

We’re Only In It For The Money

先週金曜日朝のテニス (シングルス) は 6-1 6-0 で快勝、誕生日を勝利で飾りました (笑)。コートに向かう車の中で Frank Zappa の「Mystery Disc」を聴いていたのが良かったのかも知れません (笑)

On tennis (singles) matches last Friday morning (my birthday BTW), I could win against two opponents at 6-1 and 6-0 respectively which was a good success. This would be probably because I listened to the Frank Zappa’s “Mystery Disc” CD on my way to the tennis court 🙂

The Complete Village Vanguard Sessions / Art Pepper

アート・ペッパー (Art Pepper) 復帰後のアルバムの中で最も聴き応えのありスリリングな (と私が思っている) 録音、1977年7月28日〜30日のヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードでのライブ録音。1980年に日本キングから 3枚組 LP ボックスで先行発売され、すぐあとに米コンテンポラリーから 3枚の LP としてリリースされました。現在ではライブの全貌を 9枚組 CD ボックスで聴くことができます。

Art Pepper‘s awesome live recording at the Village Vanguard on July 28-30, 1977 – I believe this session is one of the finest recordings by Art Pepper after he came back in 1975 from his long absence. This superb live session was firstly released in 1980 from Japan King label as a 3LP box set. Soon after the Japanese LP box release, U.S. Contemporary label released three individual LPs (entitled “Thursday / Friday / Saturday Night at the Vanguard” respectively). Then we now have 9CD box edition, which contains all recorded materials of Art Pepper’s better days.

Jazz Winds From A New Direction / Hank Garland

時は1960年7月4日、場所はロードアイランド州ニューポートのとある邸宅。ここで興味深いレコーディングが行われ、レコード化されたのでした。

It was on July 4, 1960 at a certain beautiful mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, where and when an interesting recording session was made for vinyl release.

The Mercury New Orleans Sessions 1950 & 1953

今年発売されたばかりの、この 2枚組 CD。なんといってもジャケットがイカしてます。 ボロボロになった SP アルバム を模した装丁で、最初に手にとった時には不良品かと勘違いしましたよ . . .

This double CD album, just released in this year, has very funny artwork here – take a look, it looks like a heavily worn-out 78rpm album binder! When I saw this artwork for the first time, I thought this copy is one of substandard products . . .

Thelonious Monk in Philadelphia 1960 with Steve Lacy

先日、mhatta さんに 教えてもらって 速攻で購入した CD。 なんといっても Monk と Steve Lacy の共演が聴ける (!!) というだけでそそられます。

The other day mhatta-san let me know the release of the CD – we can finally listen to the Monk quartet with Steve Lacy on soprano sax!

詳しい内容は聴いてからのお楽しみ、あるいは mhatta 氏の日記を参照して頂くとして、Monk の未発表音源に飢えている身としては、かなり悶絶ものであります。以下、楽しみをとっておきたい方は御覧になられませんように。

My Best 5 Acquisitions in 2005

あっという間に2005年は過ぎ、2006年を迎えました。今年も宜しくお願いします。

The year 2005 passed so fast, and here comes the next year 2006 already. I sincerely hope you’ll have another nice year as vinyl/music collectors.

昨年1年間は、コレクターとしてはあまり成果があった年とはいえませんでしたが、またまたいろんな音楽に出会うことができました。振り返って個人的ベスト 5 (プラス、番外編) を列挙してみましょう。
