(Too Long) List of “Music To (…) By” Records

During the many years of my hunting records (and loving exploring listening to music), I sometimes encounter the ones with the title “Music To (blah blah) By“. I find it interesting – the phrases ending with “By”, not with “To” nor “For”.

レコード蒐集や音楽探求をこれだけ長く続けていると、時に「Music To (なんちゃらかんちゃら) By」というタイトルのレコードや曲にたびたび遭遇します。このタイトル自体がとても興味深いといいますか、最後が「To」でも「For」でもなく、「By」というのがいい味出してる気がします。

It also makes me wonder – why are there so many records containing the music intended (or effective) for listening while doing something?

そして、「〜をしている時にかかっている音楽」「〜してる時に聴くと良い音楽」「これさえあれば〜できる音楽」と銘打たれたアルバム（や曲）が、なぜあれやこれやと（しかも最後が「By」のパターンで）これだけ世に出ているんだろう、と。

So here’s the list of such titles I could find (so far) 🙂

The Great “Bop-Gun Club” with Harry Weinger in Tokyo

2017年5月16日の夜、ハリー・ワインガー (Harry Weinger) さんとついにお会いすることができました。

It was a cloudy Tuesday night, May 16, 2017, when I finally had the great privilege of meeting Mr. Harry Weinger for the first time in person.

ハリーさんは現在、米ユニバーサルミュージックエンタープライズのA&R副代表として活躍するほか、ニューヨーク大学のクライヴ・デイビス・レコード音楽学部で非常勤講師も勤めています。最も有名なのは、「Star Time」ボックスセット（1991年）などでの、2度のグラミー賞の受賞でしょう。

He is a Vice President of Product Development/A&R for Universal Music Enterprises, as well as an adjunct instructor at the NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. He is best known as a two-time Grammy winner, including the famous “Star Time” box set (1991).

Get On Up / ジェームス・ブラウン 最高の魂を持つ男

2014年8月に本国アメリカで封切後、大いに話題になった本作、先日(2015年5月30日)ついに日本で公開されました。

まだ観に行けてないのですが、尊師JB好きの娘と一緒に近々映画館に観に行きたいところ。

マニアにとってはニヤリとさせられるシーンの連続（同時に「なぜあれやこれを触れてないの？」という不満の連続も）と聞いています。ここはひとつ、先入観なしに（かつマニアックに）楽しみながら観てみようと思います。

本稿は、The Afrofunk Music Forum に 2006年に掲載された David McDavitt 氏の記事「The Fela/James Brown Connection」を、ご本人の許可を得て日本語翻訳したものです。

This article is a Japanese translation of 2006 article by Mr. David McDavitt, entitled “The Fela/James Brown Connection”. Presented here with David-san’s permission.

 

ミスター・ブラウンとオリジナル J.B.’s がナイジェリアはラゴスに赴いたのは1970年12月とされています。その一方で、それに先立つこと数ヶ月、1970年7月22日録音の「There Was A Time (I Got To Move)」や同年8月16日録音「I Got To Move」ではすでに、アフロビート的なアレンジの萌芽が感じられるのは興味深いところです。

Mr. Brown and his original J.B.’s toured Lagos, Nigeria in December 1970. On the other hand, prior to the Lagos one-nighter, Mr. Brown recorded “There Was A Time (I Got To Move)” (recorded on July 22, 1970) and “I Got To Move” (recorded on August 16, 1970) – both already shows an interesting sign of influence from Afro music.

It’s a real pity – we can’t see the movie until next spring in Japan – get on up! All I can do so far is to listen to the Original Soundtrack album, watching the official trailers, seeking and reading the reviews online, etc…

日本では、来春公開予定とのこと。。。とても待ちきれません。サントラCDを聴いたり、予告編を観たり、オンラインでレビューを探して読みあさったりが関の山。

James Brown Live In Italy 1971 With Bootsy Collins

1971年、イタリアでの収録とされる尊師 ミスター・ブラウン (James Brown) の白黒映像は、以前からその存在が知られていましたが、最近になって、そのほぼ完全版（当時テレビ放送されたもの）があちらこちらで流通しているようです。しかし、その映像の（巷で言われている）収録日に疑問があります。

There have been some famous B/W films of The Godfather Of Soul James Brown here and there, although not complete, supposedly shot in Italy, 1971. And recently I found the complete version (as it was aired on TV at that time) circulating on the Internet. However, the recorded date of these films, as spread in the public, poses a question.

忌野清志郎 フジテレビアーカイブス完全版 (その2)

少し間があいてしまいましたが、前回の「その1」に引き続き、 2009年7月17日〜18日、フジテレビ NEXT チャンネルで 8時間にも渡って放送された 忌野清志郎 フジテレビアーカイブス 完全版 という番組の後半部分レビューです。

渾身のナッシュビル三部作が不発に終わり、怒涛のインディーズ時代 に突入するわけですが、今回の放送で最も貴重 (再放送されにくい) な部分は、個人的にはこの時代ではないかと思います。音楽的にも非常に充実していた時期で、見応え、聞き応え満点です。

また、2003年のアルバム「KING」から RC 時代を彷彿とさせ、かつ以前より熟成された完成型王道忌野ロックに回帰していきますが、そこに至る前にたくさんの冒険・遊び・尖った演奏をしていたからこそ、晩年の円熟味を増した歌唱・演奏・ステージに至ることが出来たんだと思います。
