Thelonious Monk & Van Morrison LP (Concert Vault)

フィルモアで有名なあの ビル・グレアム（Bill Graham）が権利を持っていた音源や映像を取得し、USD3.99/月、または USD39.99/年でオンラインストリーミングで聴いたり観たりできる（かつては無料でした）Concert Vault / Wolfgang’s Vault をご存知の方も多いでしょう。

2013年9月現在では Wolfgang’s Vault から独立した別サイトとなった Concert Vault で、従来通りメンバー向けストリーミングを行っている他、音源のオンラインダウンロードも有料で行っています（年間会員になると、期間限定無料ダウンロードを行っていたりします）。本家 Wolfgang’s Vault では、ロックを中心にしたさまざまなジャンルの音楽やミュージシャンにまつわるノベルティなどを引き続き販売しています。

とにかくLP化、CD化されていないお宝ライブ音源がざっくざっく。過去にブートレグやハーフオフィシャルでのみ聴けた音源も、圧倒的にまともな音質で（しかも権利関係はきちんとクリアされた上で）聴けたりするのが嬉しい限りです。音源のディジタルダウンロード（320kbps MP3）も、ほとんどが1ライブ USD5.00 しかしません。

個人的には無料お試しアカウント期間中に聴いた James Brown at Newport Jazz Festival, July 6, 1969 と Thelonious Monk at Avery Fisher Hall, July 3, 1975 でノックアウトされました。前者はブートなどでは聴けるものでしたが、こうやって正規で聴けるのは感慨もひとしおです。後者は、数年前にハーフオフィシャルでCDリリースされていましたが、最悪の音質で、尊師モンクの現存する最終録音を素直に楽しむことは難しかったのですが、こちらはピッチも修正されきちんとした音質で聴く事ができ感涙ものです。

で、今年の4月に勢いで（笑）年間アカウントを申し込んだのですが、その際なんとサイトで公開されている音源を元に作られたLPを2枚、無料でプレゼント（送料は実費）するキャンペーン中だったのです。しかもその対象がモンクさまとヴァン・モリソンだったからたまりません。

到着するのに5ヶ月も要する、という、ちょっとアレな展開でした（その間に何度もサポートにメールしたりもしました）が、先日無事届きました。元々LP/CD化する予定のなかった（音質的にも必ずしも完璧とはいえない）音源をいまさらLPで聴く意味があるのか、は微妙なところですが。。。

That’s A Plenty! (Part 2)

娘が生まれて初めて「That’s A Plenty」を聴いてからはや3ヶ月。未だにこの楽曲に飽きる気配はみせません。クルマで移動中は、かならず That’s A Plenty プレイリストの再生をせがみますし、最近購入したディジタルピアノでも That’s A Plenty の Aメロ Bメロを嬉々として弾き、自転車でお散歩中も鼻歌でメロディを歌う毎日です。

It’s been three months since my daughter knew that old standard tune “That’s A Plenty”, and she never lost interest to this song: she always ask me to play the playlist (on my iPhone) containing various versions of “That’s A Plenty”; she loves to play A melody and B melody of that tune with her new digital piano; she still hums the tune while she rides on her bicycle outside.

That’s A Plenty! (Part 1)

私がここ暫く Plays Monk ものにドップリ浸っている一方、5歳の娘は最近ある曲に熱狂的にハマっています。

I’ve been exploring the vast world of “Plays Monk” by various musicians (as you see on my previous posts here), while my five-years-old daughter fell deeply in love with one particular song.

 

1914年、Lew Pollack 作曲、Ray Gilbert 作詞のスタンダードナンバー、「That’s A Plenty」です。

The song is “That’s A Plenty”, an old standard tune written by Lew Pollack and Ray Gilbert in 1914.

（私のお下がりの）娘の iPhone には、現時点で32バージョン（一部同一演奏の重複あり）の「That’s A Plenty」が同期されており、毎日何度も何度も聴いたり歌ったり弾いたりして楽しんでいます。

Her iPhone (handed down from me) always contains many versions of “That’s A Plenty” (32 versions so far) – she enjoys this number so much, listening to it, humming along with it, playing it on keyboards, etc.

Diversity of “Plays Monk”, Pt. 6: Hal Willner – That’s The Way I Feel Now

真打ちその1。全てのモンクトリビュートものの規範となる素晴らしいアルバムです。

唯一といっていい欠点は、（過去に多くの方が指摘してきたように）「このアルバムがモンク存命中に出なかったこと」という一点だけでしょう。オリジナルのリリースは1984年。モンクがこの世を去った2年後になります。

LP（2枚組）も CD も廃盤。しかも CD は7曲もカットされ、曲順も異なります。今こそ、オリジナルの2枚組LPの全曲による CD 再発を強く希望します。

ジャズギターの重鎮 ジム・ホール の、ほとんど知られていない演奏が収録されたアルバムを入手しました。かなりイイです。

I happened to obtain the album featuring one of the least-known recordings by the Jazz guitar maestro Jim Hall – very interesting one and I love it.

Pascal Pinon’s 2nd Album due for release 2013

2010年暮れにリリースされ評判となった1枚目から2年、やっと来年1月〜2月のリリースが決まったようです。

Jim Hall Live! Vol. 2-4 (ArtistShare)

（2012年10月29日、2012年11月27日、2013年11月10日追記あり）

1975年6月11〜13日にトロントのバーボンストリートで行われた ジム・ホール (Jim Hall) トリオのライブ。ドン・トンプソン (Don Thompson) とテリー・クラーク (Terry Clarke) という当時のレギュラーグループによる密度の高い演奏。以前ここに載せた「Jazz Impressions of Japan」同様、最高の絡みが十二分に楽しめる著名盤です。

Upgrade and Afterlife / Gastr del Sol

I don’t remember exactly when I got to know of (and when I got interested in) these Gastr del Sol albums – maybe somewhere on the web, in the early 2000s? Anyway just after I gave it a listen to the first few minutes of the CD album “Upgrade & Afterlife ”, I soon was fascinated with the sound – that could be described as the beauty of dissonance or reposeful noise.

ガスター・デル・ソル (Gastr del Sol) のアルバム、いつその存在に初めて気付いたのか、いつ興味を持ち出したのか、どういうわけか正確に覚えていません。多分2000年代の始め頃、web かどこかで知ったのでしょうか。ともあれ CD を入手、「Upgrade & Afterlife 」の最初の数分を聴いただけで、あっという間にその音の虜になってしまいました。「美しい不協和音」というべきか、「心地よいノイズ」というべきか。緊張感を伴って仔細まで聴き入ってしまうのに、爽やかさと安堵感も伴うという、不思議な音源。

What the EP (Extended Playing) Originally Stands For

Google Books 上で The Billboard （米「ビルボード」誌）のバックナンバーが1942年のものからほぼ全て閲覧可能になっています。これにより、レーベル、レコード製造、アーティストの動向など、当時のレコード業界のさまざまな側面の歴史を調査するのが格段に楽になりました。これまでは、図書館のような施設で閲覧したり、目星をつけた号を古本屋やオンラインオークションで購入するしかなかったのですから、コンピュータ上でネットワーク越しに検索しながら目当ての記事を閲覧できるというのは、隔世の感があります。

Almost all back issues of The Billboard magazine (since 1942) is searchable and browsable on Google Books website. This enables us to do very convenient research through the web, on history of record labels, record production, artists and many other topics on record industries in the past. Previously we had to go to libaries to look for specific back issues, or we had to look for and buy them at second hand bookstores or at online auctions.

今回は、マイクログルーヴレコード黎明期の「コロンビア対RCAヴィクター」 「33 1/3 対 45」回転数競争あたりからはじめて、諸説入り乱れて解釈が分かれている「EP」というタームについて、過去の資料を探ってみましょう。Wikipedia 日本語版 では 33 1/3回転7インチ盤である、と書かれている EP盤ですが、それは 誤り で、あくまで45回転7インチ盤の一種である、ということがお分かり頂けるかと思います。

A Few Facts About EmArcy Label, Pt.2

気がつくと 前回の前編 から5年以上もあいてしまいました。すんません。その後も幾人かの方に「続編をお願い」「本題を早く」とリクエストを受け続け（笑）、年明けから暇を見つけてこつこつ書きため、新たに調べ物を行い、今回やっと本題の中編を書き終わりました。

It’s already been over five years since I posted the first part of the EmArcy article (sorry still available in Japanese only) – sorry for that. Several people have contacted and asked me when would the next part available – this month I managed to have spare time to write it – part 2 of the EmArcy article – including further research on various things. And now it’s finally available public.


エマーシー (EmArcy) レーベルのシングル（16000番台）、10インチLP（26000番台）、12インチLP（36000番台）の オリジナル盤判定基準 について、長々と書いてみました。リリース開始時期の特定 や、新たに判明した プレス工場 の話なども書いています。とりあえず日本語版だけの公開です。こちら からどうぞ。

This part 2 (in Japanese only yet) features the release period of EmArcy titles, as well as checkpoints for identifying original issues of EmArcy 16000 (45/78 rpm), 26000 (10inch LP) and 36000 (12inch LP) series.


次回の後編では、EmArcy と関わりの深い傍系レーベル、ウィング (Wing) の話と、第1次 EmArcy 終焉の1959年以降のお話を書く予定です。

The following part 3 (last part) that I am going to start writing in the near future, will feature stories around the Wing subsidiary label, and the EmArcy brand after it became less active in 1959.
