Good Vibrations (78 rpm) / The Beach Boys

世界で最も有名な未完のアルバム、といってよいであろう、ビーチ・ボーイズ (The Beach Boys) の「SMiLE」関連の音源は、過去に何度となくリリースが噂されてきました。古くは1973年にリリースしようとしていたことが明らかになっていますし、1988年にもボックス化される話がありました。

Maybe the most famous “unreleased” album ever – “SMiLE” by The Beach Boys. There has been so many rumors and announcements in the past about releasing the SMiLE era outtakes in one package. The oldest attempt to finish the Smile album known so far was in 1973. Later in 1988 another attempt was made to release SMiLE materials.

 

で、今回も「Smile Sessions」が出る出ると話題になっていますが、さて本当に出るのでしょうか。予想通り当初の予定からは遅れつつあるようで、現時点での最新情報では2011年8月9日リリースとのことです。

Recently yet another announcement was made that the “Smile Sessions” will be released in 2011 – the release date was slated again several times, but anyway the most recent news says it will be out on August 9, 2011.

 

先月、そのリリースの予告編として、“Good Vibrations” と “Heroes And Villains” をカップリングした10インチアナログがリリースされました。なんと 78回転 です。

Last month an interesting title was released, probably as a trailer of the Smile Sessions – double 10-inch vinyl release, coupling “Good Vibrations” and “Heroes And Villains”, on microgroove 78 rpm!

Max Roach a la carte

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put ’em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

 

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach’s other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

昨年リリースされていた本作品。気にはなってたもののすっかり忘れていて、結局買ったのは先週でした。幸い国内でも LP でリリースされていたので、当然ながらそちらを購入。

This album was out in last October. I was thinking to take a listen, but I completely forgot to buy one. Anyway I found a LP version of this album last week – that’s why this is here.

というわけで先週届きました (笑) A面が D1 で B面が D2 のプロモ盤 (東海岸プレス)。

Capitol Label Variation complete

3月14日付で初稿を公開した 「Capitol Label Variations (in its early era)」。 4月14日に更新状況を 「Capitol Label Variation being updated」 としてお知らせしました。

その後も調査収集を続け、ついに今朝到着したマルーン色レーベル (Long Playing タイプ)、10インチの L- プリフィクスをもって、 buzzy-bee さんのサイトに掲載されているレインボー第3期より前のバリエーションが全部揃いました。ぱちぱち。

まだ一部疑問が残る箇所がありますが、とりあえずこれをもって完成としておきます。

あ、けど「Kenton Jazz Presents」を別レーベルとして扱ったからには、「Classics In Jazz」シリーズも別レーベルとしておいた方がよかったかも . . . うーむ、また気がむいたら更新しておきます (笑)

The Duke Plays Ellington

Ellington のピアノを猛烈に堪能したくなった時にかけるアルバムは? 人それぞれ、“Money Jungle” (United Artists) だったり、 “Duke Ellington & John Coltrane” (Impulse!) だったり、 “Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia) だったり、 あるいは渋〜く “The Pianist” (Fantasy) という人もいたり。

Which is your favourite album, when you want to fully appreciate the piano artistry of the great Duke Ellington? Some may say “Money Jungle” (United Artists) – others may include “Duke Ellington & John Coltrane” (Impulse!), “Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia), or even less-known “The Pianist” (Fantasy).

私にとっては長らく “This One’s For Blanton!” (Pablo) がそういうアルバムでした。 有名なアルバムですから愛聴されている方も多いでしょう。 かなり晩年の録音ですが、Ray Brown と寄りそう様に、この二人にしかなし得ない世界を表現しています。しかも御大 Ellington のパーカッシブなピアノが迫力充分な音質で堪能できる、まさにうってつけのアルバムです。しかし、ここ暫くはその地位を別のアルバムが奪いつつあります。

For me, “This One’s For Blanton!” (Pablo) has been such an album for a long time. On this great album (in his very last period), Ellington plays duo with Ray Brown, and presents so wonderful world, which cannot be done by anybody else. Also, this album fully features Ellington’s very percussive and powerful piano performances in very nice fidelity. I love this album so much. However, yet another album gradually replaces “This One’s For Blanton!” album in my mind as a “Holy Grail album for Ellington’s piano artistry”.

Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool” 78rpms

のちに Birth of the Cool（「クールの誕生」）というタイトルで 10インチ/12インチ LP 化された、問答無用で歴史的名盤とされている マイルス・デイビス (Miles Davis Nonet) の 1949-1950年録音。その録音時期からして、オリジナルイシューは 78回転 SP であろうことは想像に難くありません。

Miles Davis Nonet’s 1949-1950 recordings (which later included on 10-inch/12-inch LP album entitled Birth of the Cool) have been sought as one of the historically important masterpices. By the way, as the recorded date may suggest, these materials were firstly made public on 78rpm issues.
